On Sunday (March 28, 2021), Qantas announced the launch of service to Mount Gambier from both Adelaide and Melbourne, marking the first time the national carrier offers service to the South Australian city. QantasLink will operate five weekly return flights and the routes will be serviced with 50-seat Bombardier Q-300s (De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300), configured with upgraded cabin interiors, providing 500 weekly seats. The inaugural flights today will be welcomed at Mount Gambier Regional Airport and Adelaide Airport with traditional water canon salutes and celebrations with community leaders and customers. Today’s inaugural services coincide with the launch of service from Melbourne and Wagga Wagga.

In Sunday’s announcement, QantasLink’s CEO, John Gissing, said,

“As the national carrier, we have an important role to play in driving tourism and supporting the industry in its recovery from COVID-19. We know Australians love to travel and many are looking to visit places they haven’t been before. The addition of Mount Gambier to our network will support the growing demand we’re seeing and help deliver a boost for local businesses.

“We’re working with tourism partners to promote the unique geographic landscape and world class wine of the Limestone Coast to millions of our frequent flyers around the country. The new flights will also offer locals more choice and competitive fares on what were previously monopoly routes, with seamless onward connections to our large domestic network through Adelaide and Melbourne. Our customers will also enjoy the benefits of our premium service, including complimentary food and drinks, baggage and lounge access in capital cities before they fly.”

Celebrating the launch of the new route, Qantas ids offering Mount Gambier residents the opportunity to join their Frequent Flyer program for free until April 30, 2021 via qantas.com/freejoin. Members will be able to earn Qantas Points and Status credits on the new routes and can also use points to book flights. The airline is also offering unlimited flight changes through at least February 2022, for flights booked by at least the end of April 2021, without change fees, though a fare difference may apply.
