Lufthansa has announced the completion of the assembly and display of the historic Junkers Ju 52 and Lockheed L-1649A at the soon to be opened Lufthansa Conference and Visitor Center in Frankfurt.

On Tuesday (December 16, 2025), Lufthansa announced that the assembly and display of their historic Junkers Ju 52 and Lockheed L-1649A Super Star has been completed. The iconic aircraft are now on display in ‘Lufthansa Group Hangar One’ in the soon to be opened Lufthansa Conference and Visitor Center in Frankfurt. As previously reported, over the past few months the aircraft were delivered in individual parts by heavy transporters and have since been reassembled with great attention to detail in their new home near Frankfurt Airport. These aircraft will be the main attractions of the ‘Lufthansa Group Hangar One,’ and thanks to a glass façade, visitors will also be able to admire these two icons of aviation history from the outside. The opening of the conference and visitor center coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Deutsche Luft Hansa and underscores the importance of aviation history for the Lufthansa Group.
Following over 80 years in service, the Junkers Ju 52 (registration D-AQUI) was retired from commercial operations at the end of 2018. After a long and eventful history, the aircraft was extensively restored between 1984 and 1986. Since then, the lovingly nicknamed ‘Aunt Ju’ has carried over 250,000 passengers on sightseeing flights for Lufthansa. The first Junkers Ju 52 joined the Lufthansa fleet in 1932 and quickly became the backbone of the airline’s fleet. Valued for its efficiency and reliability, the Ju 52 accounted for about 50 percent of Lufthansa’s aircraft at that time.

The Lockheed Super Star joined the Lufthansa fleet in 1957, and was the first aircraft to feature the exclusive ‘Senator Class’ of travel. Its main route was the nonstop transatlantic connection to New York International Airport, commonly known as Idlewild Airport at the time (now New York-JFK). Technologically, the aircraft was also a masterpiece, with its four piston engines marking the end of the era of classic propeller aircraft. These flights, lasting up to 17 hours, departed from Hamburg, where the maintenance base was also located. The Lockheed L-1649A Super Star is 35.42 meters long, has a wingspan of 45.18 meters, and stands 7.12 meters tall.
