On Thursday (January 25, 2024), from the second day of FITUR 2024 in Madrid, Iberia and the Government of Puerto Rico announced that in celebration of the carrier’s 75th anniversary of service to the island, Iberia will increase to daily the frequency of service between Madrid and San Juan.  The route will operate most of the year, and the increased service represents an average growth of 33 percent in the first 10 months of this year compared to 2023.  As part of the agreement between the carrier and the Government of Puerto Rico, Iberia will also include Puerto Rico in their promotional activities and advertising campaigns, as well as training for European travel agencies and wholesalers.

Speaking at FITUR 2024 on Thursday, Puerto Rico’s Governor, Pedro Pierluisi, said,

“Iberia is an important partner of the Puerto Rican tourism industry due to its global reach, strategic location, innovation in aviation and commitment to promoting the island.  The increase to seven weekly flights for 8 months and five weekly flights for the rest of the year is equivalent to 18,000 additional seats, 35% more than in 2023.  The new itinerary increases Iberia's air capacity to 95,328 annual seats, which is estimated to contribute about $24 million to the local treasury this year.”

Also commenting on the new commercial partnership, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company’s Executive Director, Mercado Santiago, said,

“We are very pleased with the positive results that we have achieved in recent years through the commercial alliance and strategic efforts that both the CTPR and Discover Puerto Rico carry out with Iberia. Puerto Rico's participation in FITUR 2024, as well as in "Other business fairs in the tourism industry, and the creation of trade agreements of this type are key to our work plan, to strengthen the positioning of Puerto Rico as a world-class destination and generate new business and investment opportunities.”

Iberia’s Director of Commercial, Network and Alliances, María Jesús López Solás, said,

“We are very proud to celebrate that 75 years ago we began this relationship with Puerto Rico, when we made our first flight between Madrid and San Juan.  Since then, we have always maintained very close ties with this country, which are now reinforced thanks to the agreement we are signing and the increase in frequencies that we have announced, which will offer better connectivity options in Europe and the rest of the world for Puerto Ricans.”
