On Tuesday (June 17, 2025), from the Paris Air Show 2025, Wizz Air announced that they have selected the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM GTF™ engine to power up to 177 additional Airbus A321neos, bringing their total commitment of GTF-powered aircraft to 453.  Previously, the carrier selected the GTF engine to power 276 Airbus A320neos, A321neos, and A321XLRs in both 2016 and 2020.  Additionally, Wizz Air will receive engine maintenance from Pratt & Whitney through a long-term Enginewise® Comprehensive service agreement.

In Tuesday’s announcement, Wizz Air’s CEO, József Váradi, said,

“Our relationship with Pratt & Whitney has been instrumental in supporting our growth strategy, which will enable Wizz Air to have a fleet of 500 aircraft within a decade.  GTF engine technology delivers the most economical solution, providing unmatched fuel efficiency while enabling quieter and less emitting flights for our passengers, and a lower cost base for the airline. This agreement is in line with our Customer First Compass strategy which puts the customer in the focus also by providing the best-in-class aircraft technology with the lowest emission intensity per passenger kilometre.”

Also commenting on the incremental GTF engine order, Pratt & Whitney’s President – Commercial Engines, Rick Deurloo, added,

“Today marks another important milestone in our long-standing relationship with Wizz Air and is a vote of confidence in the GTF engine.  Pratt & Whitney has been exclusively powering the airline's growth since 2003, and our GTF engines will continue to deliver the lowest fuel consumption available.”

Currently, Pratt & Whitney powers Wizz Air’s fleet of 163 A320neo Family aircraft with GTF engines, and 73 A320ceo Family Aircraft with IAE V2500® engines.  Wizz Air is the largest A320neo Family operator in Europe, and recently took delivery of their first A321XLR, becoming the first airline in the world to operate the A321XLR powered by GTF engines.  Along with today’s agreement, Wizz Air has secured a special support package to enhance operational stability, and to mitigate the financial and operational impact of grounded aircraft.  Ultimately, the GTF Advantage engine will power the carrier’s new A321neo aircraft deliveries when it becomes the production standard in the coming years.

Budapest, Hungary-based Wizz Air is the fastest growing European ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) and operates an all Airbus A320 and A321 Family fleet of 236 aircraft, 66 percent of which are new generation technology aircraft, with an average age of 4.56 years.  Wizz Air is the largest ULCC in Central and Eastern Europe and serves over 1,100 routes to/from 50 countries.  During FY 2025, Wizz Air carried 63.4 million guests.  Wizz Air offers superior guest service at exceptionally low fares.  Shares in the company trade on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WIZZ.
