On Monday (July 14, 2025), Wizz Air Holdings PLC announced a strategic realignment that will focus on the company’s core markets in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as select Western European markets, including Austria, Italy and the UK.  As part of this strategic realignment, the carrier will suspend Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations effective September 1st, 2025.  Wizz Air has cited engine reliability constraints, particularly in hot and harsh environments, geopolitical volatility, and regulatory barriers as their rationale to refocus their core business.  According to the company, these factors have significantly impacted the viability of Wizz Air's ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) model in the region, and their ability to deliver profitability in line with their core European operations.

In Monday’s announcement, Wizz Air’s CEO, József Váradi, said,

“We have had a tremendous journey in the Middle East and are proud of what we have built.  I thank our highly dedicated employees for their relentless efforts and commitment for developing the WIZZ brand in new and dynamic markets.  However, the operating environment has changed significantly.  Supply chain constraints, geopolitical instability, and limited market access have made it increasingly difficult to sustain our original ambitions.  While this was a difficult decision, it is the right one given the circumstances.  We continue to focus on our core markets and on initiatives that enhance Wizz Air’s customer proposition and build shareholder value.”

Customers with existing bookings beyond August 31, 2025 will be contacted directly via email with options for refunds or alternative travel arrangements.  Those who booked through third-party providers are advised to contact their provider directly.

Budapest, Hungary-based Wizz Air is the fastest growing European ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC), and operates an all Airbus A320 and A321 Family fleet of 237 aircraft.  Wizz Air is the largest ULCC in Central and Eastern Europe and serves over 830 routes to/from nearly 190 destinations in 51 countries.  During FY 2025, Wizz Air carried 63.4 million guests.  Wizz Air offers superior guest service at exceptionally low fares.  Shares in the company trade on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WIZZ.
