On Monday (July 14, 2025), Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, and Romaero, a local leader in aerospace and defense, announced the opening of a new center solely dedicated to the maintenance of Wizz Air’s fleet at Romaero’s facility, located next to Baneasa International Airport.  With new aircraft joining the carrier’s Bucharest Băneasa, Sibiu, Suceava and Timisoara bases this year, Wizz is set to operate a local fleet of 43 aircraft for winter 2025/26.  Wizz Air has signed a three-year contract with a certified maintenance organization that also supports the carrier in Italy and Albania, and together with Romaero, specialized resources will concentrate operational efforts to deliver high quality services to the company’s fleet.

Speaking at the press conference in Bucharest today, Wizz Air Malta’s Managing Director, Mauro Peneda, said,

“The opening of our first dedicated maintenance center in Romania is a strategic leap forward for Wizz Air.  After inaugurating our base at Baneasa Airport back in April, and announcing a second aircraft just last week, we are pleased to be able to come with another important local development.  It reflects our deep commitment to the Romanian market and strengthens our operational capabilities in the region.  With the largest fleet in our network already based here, this investment ensures greater efficiency, reliability and support for our continued growth, proudly aligned with our 14-billion euros ‘Customer First Compass’ transformation plan.  We are also proud to further contribute to local, highly skilled job creation in a critical part of the aviation supply chain, and continue to foster the long-term development of Romanian aviation.”

Also commenting at today’s press conference, Romaero’s Managing Director, Bogdan COSTAŞ, added,

Wizz Air’s expansion plan aligns with Romaero’s strategy to develop this partnership for the civil MRO side of the business.  We trust this project to be a strategic pylon in Romaero’s recovery plan.  We believe in this partnership and adding value to the MRO market across Europe, strengthening our presence by providing on time and on quality services for Wizz Air’s aircraft.”

Wizz Air’s Baneasa Maintenance Center will begin operations in October 2025, representing an investment that will improve operational efficiency and enhance maintenance capacity in the region. With access to this new dedicated MRO facility, Wizz Air will streamline operations, minimize downtime and ensure priority service, enhancing both efficiency and reliability across their Romanian and European fleet.  The maintenance facility will carry out heavy maintenance, such as engine changes, as well as light maintenance, including routine checkups and annual inspections, for both Romanian-based and other Wizz Aircraft.
