Wizz Air has announced the gradual closure of their base in Vienna, Austria. The decision follows a strategic review of the carrier’s operations and fleet allocation. Austrian customers can still access Wizz Air’s services via Bratislava and Budapest.

On Wednesday (September 10, 2025), Wizz Air announced that following a strategic review of their operations and fleet allocation, they will gradually close their base in Vienna, Austria. The closure process will take place in two phases, with two aircraft and service to Bilbao and London Gatwick to be withdrawn on October 26, 2025, and the three remaining aircraft and the rest of the routes ceasing operations on March 15, 2026. Wizz Air originally launched their Vienna base in 2018 and currently has a based fleet of five Airbus A321neos, operating 28 routes to 20 countries. However, due to a significant increase in airport costs and taxes, the carrier has determined that Vienna in no longer compatible with their ultra-low cost business model. Austrian customers will still be able to access Wizz Air services via Bratislava and Bucharest.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Wizz Air’s Managing Director, Mauro Peneda, said,
“We recently celebrated seven years of operations in Vienna, during which Wizz Air has remained committed to offering Austrian travellers affordable and convenient travel options. Unfortunately, the airport cost base in Vienna, as well as taxes and ground handling services have risen significantly since our launch, making continued operations unsustainable. This was a difficult, but necessary decision to safeguard the long-term competitiveness of our business. We will support our colleagues in Vienna with job opportunities across our ever-growing network. We are grateful for their dedication and thank our passengers for their understanding. Guided by our Customer First Compass initiative, we will continue working to ensure that all our decisions place customers and employees at the heart of Wizz Air’s future growing network.”
Customers with bookings on affected flights beyond the route suspension dates will be contacted directly by Wizz Air and offered a full refund in WIZZ credits, or a rebooking on an alternative Wizz Air flight.
