On Wednesday (September 7, 2022), WestJet announced the reveal of a new uniform collection for frontline team members, designed to be more inclusive. Speaking at Wednesday’s special runway event at Calgary International Airport, WestJet’s Chief Operating Officer, Diederik Pen, said,

“The launch of our new uniforms is not only representative of WestJet's brand and inclusive culture, but of the incredible WestJetters who make up our unique identity. Our new uniform collection has gone through design refinement and extensive wear-testing and I am so proud to stand alongside the many dedicated WestJetters who brought this uniform collection to life as we celebrate this milestone and look forward to a bright future ahead.”

Also commenting on the uniform collaboration, Designer, Juli Grbac, added,

“It has been a joy and an honour to be part of the WestJet family and bring this new look to life. After significant designing, testing and feedback, these uniforms embrace the diverse needs of WestJet’s frontline staff and provide a look that will stand the test of time that can be worn with confidence.”

As part of the design process, WestJetters across all departments were consulted to ensure the uniforms would suit those who would actually be wearing them. WestJet’s new uniforms, The Lakes and Rocky Mountain collections, have been designed to allow team members to select the uniform that is most authentic and comfortable for them, regardless of gender. The carrier also recently updated their tattoo policy to allow frontline staff to showcase visible tattoos and celebrate individuality while wearing their uniform and representing the airline.

Further commenting on the new uniform collections, WestJet’s Director – Training and Uniforms, Leah McDonald, said,

“Our WestJetters spend a lot of time in their uniform, so it was integral for us to create a product to the highest safety standard that reflects the diverse team members who show up every day to deliver care to our guests. This journey began four years ago and throughout the process, inclusivity has led our design and development. These uniforms were created for all bodies, allowing each of our frontline team members to proudly wear something that reflects their individual style, identity and authentic self.”

With safety above all, every uniform component was tested for harmful substances or potential skin irritants. Additionally, WestJet becomes the first airline in Canada to carry the Standard 100 OEKO-TEX certification, ensuring WestJetters will both look and feel good while in uniform. The new uniforms were produced by the North American firm Unisync, and on May 30, 2022, Unisync and WestJet were awarded ‘Best Program in North America – Aviation’ and ‘Best of the Best’ at the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers annual convention.

In 26 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent. The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to 100 destinations in 23 countries (pre-pandemic). Even during the pandemic, WestJet maintained their rating by Cirium as one of the top ten airlines for on-time performance in North America.
