WestJet to Launch New Service Between Winnipeg and Los Angeles From October 31, 2022

WestJet will launch year-round three times weekly flights between Winnipeg and Los Angeles starting October 31, 2022. The announcment took place on Wednesday, August 17th at a special event held at Winnipeg’s Metropolitan Entertainment Centre.

On Wednesday (August 17, 2022) from a special event at Winnipeg’s Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, WestJet announced the launch on new direct service between Winnipeg and Los Angeles, with three weekly year-round flights from October 31, 2022. The event was attended by notable guests including The Honourable Heather Stefanson, Premier of Manitoba; Nick Hays, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority; Dayna Spiring, President and CEO, Winnipeg Economic Development; and Rod Bruinooge, Interim CEO, Manitoba Film and Music. In 2021, the film and television industry brought over $364 million of production volume to Manitoba.


In Wednesday’s announcement, WestJet’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill, said,


“It was an honour to attend today's celebration that is the result of the collaborative partnership between Winnipeg Airports Authority, Economic Development Winnipeg, the Government of Manitoba and WestJet. WestJet is thrilled to be a part of this investment creating a new, direct link for business, tourism and entertainment between these two unique cites, building on our commitment to Winnipeg.”


At Wednesday’s event in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Premier, the Honourable Heather Stefanson, said,


“Manitoba's film and television industry plays a key role in our provincial economy, and I want to commend WestJet for this strategic investment that will have significant benefits not only for the entertainment industry, but for Manitoba's tourism, trade and business sectors. As Manitoba’s economy takes off into a new era of growth, I look forward to continuing to work with WestJet and all economic development partners to identify opportunities of growth and promote Manitoba as a destination of choice.”

WestJet will be the only carrier offering direct service between Winnipeg and Los Angeles. For guests traveling beyond Los Angeles, WestJet’s codeshare partnership with Delta Air Lines provides convenient one-stop connectivity via LAX to 20 Major U.S. cities. This winter, WestJet will solidify their position as the leader in Winnipeg with 22 direct routes, more non-stop routes than any other airline.

In 26 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent. The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to 100 destinations in 23 countries (pre-pandemic). Even during the pandemic, WestJet maintained their rating by Cirium as one of the top ten airlines for on-time performance in North America.
