WestJet to Acquire an Additional Boeing 737-8 MAX on Lease From AerDragon

On Thursday (June 6, 2024), WestJet announced the acquisition of an additional Boeing 737-8 MAX on lease from AerDragon, which will be integrated into the carrier’s expanding fleet by year-end 2024.  Although WestJet guests will benefit from the additional capacity, the new aircraft will not immediately reflect the carrier’s interior cabin experience and brand identity.  However, the aircraft interior refresh will be prioritized as part of WestJet’s existing fleet reconfiguration plans, to ensure a consistent guest experience.

In Thursday’s announcement, WestJet’s EVP and Chief Financial Officer, Mike Scott, said,

“In partnership with AerDragon, we are adding to our Boeing 737 MAX family and building momentum towards supporting our capacity growth plans for 2024.  Every aircraft added to our fleet means critical air access for Canadians and today's announcement further reaffirms our mission to provide affordable air travel.”

Also commenting on the new lease agreement, AerDragon’s Chief Executive Officer, Gang Li, said,

“We are pleased to welcome WestJet to AerDragon's growing list of customers.  We look forward to continuing to support WestJet’s development and building a long-term partnership with the airline.”

With 28 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent.  The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to over 100 destinations in 26 countries.
