WestJet Partners With TELUS to Provide Fast and Free Onboard Internet Delivered by Starlink

Updated: Jul 29

WestJet has today announced a new partnership with TELUS, which will enhance the guest experience with free onboard Wi-Fi delivered by Starlink.

On Wednesday (July 24, 2024), WestJet announced the launch of a new Partnership with TELUS to leverage Starlink technology to deliver best-in-class free high-speed internet onboard from December 2024.  This announcement marks the start of a fully-integrated partnership between WestJet and TELUS, elevating the carrier’s inflight connectivity experience.  Over the next few months, the partners will introduce additional, exclusive benefits and perks for WestJet Rewards loyalty program members and TELUS customers.

In Wednesday’s announcement, WestJet Group’s EVP and Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill, said,

“Through our strategic partnership with TELUS, we are setting a new standard in the Canadian airline industry by offering Starlink's revolutionary inflight connectivity, and thanks to TELUS we are able to bring this inflight experience to WestJet Rewards guests for free.”

Also commenting on the new connectivity partnership, TELUS’ EVP and President – TELUS Consumer Solutions, Zainul Mawji, said,

“The future of inflight connectivity and entertainment is here, and we're excited to enter this long-term partnership with WestJet to enhance the flying experience for guests and bring more value to WestJet Rewards members and TELUS customers, whether they are on the ground or in the air.”

SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Sales, Jason Fritch, added,

“With more than 1,000 aircraft committed to Starlink worldwide, high-speed, low-latency internet is the future of aviation connectivity and we're excited to work with WestJet to bring Starlink technology to their guests in the coming months.”

With the new partnership, WestJet will become the largest North American and first commercial Boeing 737 operator to offer inflight connectivity powered by Starlink’s best-in-class technology, which includes the world’s largest satellite constellation.  The new onboard connectivity platform will start rolling out before the end of 2024, with plans to complete installation on WestJet’s entire single-aisle fleet by the end of 2025.  WestJet’s widebody fleet is expected to be upgraded by the end of 2026.  Access to the inflight system will be provided exclusively to WestJet Rewards members for free thanks to TELUS.
