On Wednesday (May 15, 2024), WestJet celebrated the launch of their inaugural flight between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Reykjavik (Keflavik) in Iceland, with the departure of sold-out flight 38. The new exclusive route will now operate four times weekly through October 13, 2024, with a Boeing 737 MAX jet. This marks WestJet’s seventh direct European connection from Calgary for the summer 2024 season.
In Wednesday’s announcement, WestJet’s EVP and Chief People, Corporate and Sustainability Officer, Angela Avery, said,
“Iceland offers one of the most geologically diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world and we are thrilled to provide convenient direct access to Reykjavik as we continue to expand our European network. As the only airline providing direct connectivity between Calgary and Iceland, WestJet continues to build its presence as Canada’s leisure champion, providing our guests with unprecedented and affordable access to fulfill their travel aspirations year-round.”
Also commenting the launch of WestJet’s new route to Iceland, The Calgary Airport Authority’s President and CEO, Chris Dinsdale, said,
“On behalf of The Calgary Airport Authority and our entire YYC Crew, I am thrilled to congratulate WestJet on its inaugural non-stop route from Calgary to Reykjavik. This new route is about more than just the connection between two cities, it's about recognizing a mutual commitment to global connectivity. In advancing that commitment, every step, every new destination, counts towards solidifying YYC's role and status as a global hub.”
Keflavik Airport’s Director for Airline Relations and Route Development, and Chief Commercial and Airport Development Officer, Gudmundur Dadi Runarsson, added,
“KEF is thrilled to greet its newest partner WestJet today. WestJet is showing confidence in Iceland as a destination by adding it to its impressive selection of travel opportunities, while at the same time opening Icelanders up to the experience of the great city of Calgary and all that the province of Alberta can offer. We look forward to forging a strong partnership with WestJet well into the future.”
Thanks to WestJet’s interline agreement with Icelandair, the carrier’s service to Reykjavik will enable guests to travel across both Icelandair and WestJet’s networks with a single boarding pass, and the convenience of a single check-in and baggage checked to their final destination.
With 28 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent. The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to over 100 destinations in 27 countries.
