WestJet Adds Three More Boeing 737-8 MAX Jets on Lease From SMBC Aviation Capital

WestJet has today announced the addition of three more Boeing 737-8 MAX airplanes on lease from SMBC Aviation Capital, paving the way for future growth.

On Friday (September 6, 2024), WestJet announced the acquisition of three additional Boeing 737-8 MAX jets on lease from SMBC Aviation Capital.  This is in addition to the previous announcement that WestJet was adding six 737-8 MAX aircraft earlier this summer.  The acquisition of nine leased 737-8s over the last six months allows WestJet to bolster their fleet growth plans, while managing manufacturer delays for direct-from-factory aircraft.

In Friday’s announcement, WestJet Group’s EVP and Chief Financial Officer, Mike Scott, said,

“With our longstanding partner SMBC, we are thrilled to be adding three more Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to our growing fleet as we execute upon our mission of providing affordable air travel options to our guests.”

Also commenting on WestJet’s new lease agreements, SMBC Aviation Capital’s Chief Commercial Officer, Barry Flannery, added,

“SMBC Aviation Capital is pleased to continue its partnership with WestJet, supporting their fleet expansion with these fuel-efficient, new technology aircraft.  These Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft will allow WestJet to further grow their network and continue to serve their guests with affordable air travel options.  We look forward to many more years of successful partnership with WestJet.”

Guests traveling on the newly leased Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft will notice that the cabins will not immediately reflect the WestJet experience.  However, refreshing and updating these cabins will be prioritized as part of the airline’s existing fleet reconfiguration plans.

With 28 years of service, WestJet has cut airfares for Canadians in half and increased the flying population around Canada by over 50 percent.  The airline launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, and has now grown to more than 180 aircraft and 14,000 employees, offering service to over 100 destinations in 26 countries.
