On Thursday (February 18, 2021), Virgin Australia announced two new routes and expanded frequencies for Easter 2021. The carrier will launch service between Adelaide and the Sunshine Coast, as well as between Melbourne and Ballina (Byron Bay), which will initially operate from March 29th through April 25, 2021. To celebrate the new routes, Virgin Australia is offering introductory economy class one-way fares from only $129*. The routes will be operated with a Boeing 737, adding over 13,000 seats across 37 return flights. The carrier expects to extend the flights beyond Easter, subject to the easing of border restrictions. In Thursday’s announcement, Virgin Australia Group’s CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka, said,

“The tourism industry depends on all of us getting out and safely enjoying the company of family, friends and great adventures. We have all worked hard to get to a place where we can enjoy these travel opportunities once again, with the added benefit of supporting vital jobs in our tourism destinations. Our flexible flying policy gives confidence for travellers planning ahead these Easter School holidays, and the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine adds to the positive momentum around us. There’s a lot to look forward to this Easter. We are making it easier and more affordable for travellers to take a holiday with many more options for travel direct to key leisure destinations.”

In addition to the new routes, Virgin Australia is expanding frequencies to key leisure destinations including Cairns, Hamilton Island, Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine), Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Ballina (Byron Ba, Launceston, Hobart and Broome. Kununurra will also be added across the Easter period as border restrictions ease. The launch of the new route between Adelaide and Sunshine Coast also coincides with the unveiling of Virgin Australia’s ‘new look’ Adelaide Lounge, which will officially open on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.
