On Monday (May 3, 2021), United Airlines announced the 40th anniversary of the MileagePlus loyalty program. To celebrate the milestone, this month MileagePlus is giving away four million miles to essential healthcare professionals, with four nominated winners receiving one million miles each. Additionally, United is showing their appreciation to MileagePlus members worldwide with domestic and international fare sales, surprise giveaways and 10 exclusive offers from MileagePlus partners.

In Monday’s announcement, United Airlines’ Vice President of Marketing & Loyalty and MileagePlus President, Luc Bondar, said,

“Throughout the past forty years, MileagePlus has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of our members as well as reward their loyalty. That's why we celebrate this major milestone by offering our members generous promotions throughout May. We're also taking this occasion to launch the contest to show appreciation for the healthcare workers who stepped up to protect our communities during the pandemic.”

From mow through May 17, 2021, customers are invited to nominate and U.S. frontline healthcare worker that goes above and beyond every day to make a difference and embodies some of United’s core values. These values include making the world a safer place for everyone around them, showing appreciation for all members of the community by being welcoming, kind and compassionate, being dependable and remaining determined, even when times get tough.

Throughout the month of May, United is also recognizing MileagePlus members with a variety of promotions. Leading up to the anniversary, United will offer discounted glasses of Moët champagne at United Clubs across the country and is launching an award sale, with details being announced later this week.

As previously mentioned, the carrier has teamed with MileagePlus partners on 10 anniversary offers including 2x miles on eGift cards from 40 select brands via the MileagePlus X app. United Cruises will offer earnings of up to 7 miles per $1 spent, plus up to 40,000 bonus miles for bookings through May 31, 2021 for travel through 2023. Starting May 5th through May 10th, customers can boost their miles balance with a 40 percent discount when purchasing miles. MP dining is also offering a chance for customers to win bonus miles when they dine out from May 10th through June 10th, 2021.

For the last 40 years, MileagePlus has been a leading airline loyalty program offering several industry-first innovations including the Premier program launched in 1983 and its first loyalty credit card in 1987. In 2019, United announced that MileagePlus award miles never expire, and introduced PlusPoints for MileagePlus Premier members, giving customers more flexibility in how they choose to fly. United has also worked with members to contribute to communities, donating 3.4 billion miles to charity since 2003. Global Traveler named MileagePlus the 2020 Best Frequent Flyer Program for the 17th consecutive year and the program was recently recognized as the Best Overall Frequent Flyer program by WalletHub.
