On Tuesday (June 24, 2025), Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) announced the debut of their first Airbus A350-900 at the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France. The new aircraft features a special ‘SWISS Wanderlust’ livery, a flying artwork that serves as a love letter to Switzerland as well. Although the livery may appear as a sophisticated paint job, it has actually been achieved through the use of specially certificated precision-cut films, an innovation for Airbus too.
To create the artistically designed motifs, specialists at Airbus used tailored 3D software to project the designs onto the airframe, and then divided the resulting ‘picture’ in to 360 precision-cut films. Each film was then applied manually to its precise location on the fuselage or engine nacelles. Each motif consists of multiple painstakingly matched film elements, which collectively cover around 380 square meters, marking the largest application of its kind undertaken by Airbus. The various motifs include famous buildings, well-known landmarks and traditional sports and cultural events. SWISS’ first Airbus A350-900, which is also the world’s first ‘flying art gallery’, will undergo final preparations in Toulouse before being delivered to the carrier later this summer.

The elements of the striking new livery, such as the marmot, Freddie Mercury, and the Federal Parliament Building, also offer an interactive experience. SWISS has created a special webpage where visitors can use augmented reality (AR) to explore all of the livery’s illustrations. Additionally, they can participate in a special ‘SWISS Treasure Hunt’ to find hidden details, solve intriguing puzzles, and enter to win the grand prize – an A350-900 flight for two in the new SWISS Business Class cabin.
