Southwest Airlines Opens New $100 Million Technical Operations Hangar in Denver

Updated: Mar 27, 2022

Southwest Airlines has opened a new $100 million 130,000 square-foot Technical Operations hangar and complex at Denver International Airport. The hangar can accommodate three Boeing 737s inside, and there is parking room for eight more outside.

On Thursday (March 24, 2022), Southwest Airlines announced the grand opening of a new $100 million, 130,000 square-foot Technical Operations hangar facility at Denver International Airport (DEN). The complex will be the new home to over 100 Denver-based Tech Ops team members, and includes a hangar with offices, a training area, warehouse space and maintenance shops. Three Boeing 737s can be accommodated inside the new hangar, and the facility has outside parking space for an additional eight aircraft. The complex adds a important new location within the carrier’s MRO network and will support scheduled, overnight maintenance of Southwest’s fleet of over 700 Boeing 737s.

In Thursday’s announcment, Southwest Airlines’ President and Chief Operating Officer, Mike Van de Ven, said,

“As we continue to grow and welcome more Customers at Denver International Airport, we're laser-focused on the work that happens behind-the-scenes that enables us to provide a great Customer experience. This new hangar facility is a critical investment that supports our commitment to maintaining a safe, reliable fleet so we can connect our Denver Customers to the people and the places that matter most in their lives.”

Southwest’s Denver-based Technical Operations team will move into the new facility in the coming weeks. The new facility joins the carrier’s network of six other maintenance facilities in Atlanta, Chicago (Midway), Dallas (Love Field), Houston (Hobby), Orlando and Phoenix.

Additionally, Southwest will begin moving into the first gates of a 16-gate C concourse expansion at DEN in the coming months, expanding capacity to 40 gates, more than any other airport the airline serves. The company also plans on building larger spaces in Denver for provisioning, GSE, and Cargo teams, and will expand their People Department at DEN. Southwest Airlines is one of the largest employers in Denver, with nearly 5,000 Denver-based People.
