On Tuesday (May 11, 2021), SAS announced the launch of new seasonal service between Luleå in the Swedish Lapland region and London-Heathrow. The route will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays from December 17th through March 21, 2022 and will bet the only direct route between Luleå and the UK. The Swedish Lapland offers many high-end hotels and activities for English travelers, and the schedule has been timed for convenient weekend trips by Laplanders to London. The route will be serviced with a modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A320, reducing climate affecting emissions.

In Tuesday’s announcement, SAS’ Head of Sales – Sweden, Theres Briger, said,

“We are delighted to be able to offer a route with an attractive timetable connecting Luleå, and the rest of North of Sweden, to London. Interest in Northern Scandinavia is continuously increasing as travelers seek new and more experiences in the nature. Several tour operators and travel agents have already expressed interest in the new route. London is also the largest European market for many businesses and this route will enable growth in Northern Sweden.”

SAS has introduced flexible booking options so guests can travel now or later. The carrier offers a 24-hour money back guarantee and flexible tickets on international flights that can be easily rebooked or canceled up to 72 hours before departure. For domestic trips in Scandinavia, SAS Go Flex tickets offer free rebooking up to one hour prior to departure, while SAS Plus tickets are both re-bookable and refundable.

SAS is the leading airline in Scandinavia, normally carrying over 30 million passengers annually from its main hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm to 125 destinations in Europe, the US and Asia (pre-pandemic figures). The company has targeted a reduction in carbon emissions by 25 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels and hopes to transition to 100% biofuel for domestic flights by 2030. SAS also offers ground handling services, technical maintenance and cargo services. The carrier is a founding member of the Star Alliance, which offers an extensive global network.
