On Tuesday (July 23, 2024), Boeing announced from the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) that Qatar Airways has placed an order for an additional 20 777-9 airplanes.  Qatar Airways will be the launch customer for the type, and the incremental order is part of the carrier’s fleet growth plan, which also includes 787 Dreamliners and 737 MAX Family aircraft.  With today’s order, Boeing’s 777X orderbook grows to nearly 100 jets.  This order was finalized earlier this year and listed on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries site as unidentified.

In Tuesday’s order announcement, Qatar Airways Group’s CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said,

“Qatar Airways is proud to announce an expansion to the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order with an additional 20, totalling 94 Boeing 777X aircraft.  We, as the World’s Best Airline, are an industry leader and operate one of the youngest fleets, offering unparalleled innovation and quality.  Keeping an eye on the future, we continue to ensure that all Qatar Airways passengers are only met with the best products and services available in the industry.”

Also commenting on the incremental 777X order, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ President and CEO, Stephanie Pope, added,

“Qatar Airways is a leader in our industry, and we are honored the airline added 20 more 777-9 jets to its large Boeing order book.  We appreciate their confidence that Boeing's market-leading widebody family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations.”

Award-winning Qatar Airways helped launch the 777X program, and now has 60 777-9 passenger jets on order, as well as 34 777-8 Freighters, of which the carrier is also the inaugural launch customer.

Based on the popular Boeing 777 Family, the 777X incorporates advanced technologies from the 787 Dreamliner, and has been designed to set new standards for efficiency, environmental performance and passenger experience.  The largest member of the 777 Family, the 777-9 can accommodate 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration, and offers a range of 7.295 nautical miles (13,510 km).  Boeing began certification flight testing for the 777-9 earlier this month.  In addition to the 777X Family, Qatar Airways currently has 12 787 Dreamliners and 25 737 MAX aircraft on order.
