Qatar Airways is celebrating the launch of their inaugural flight between Doha and Medan in Indonesia, which touched down on Monday, January 15, 2024. The route will now operate three times weekly with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
On Tuesday (January 16, 2024), Qatar Airways announced the launch of their inaugural flight between Doha and Medan in Indonesia, which touched down at Kualanamu International Airport on Monday, January 15th. Medan is the carrier’s third destination in Indonesia, and the new service complements Qatar Airways’ over 40 weekly flights to Jakarta and Bali. During the inaugural event in Doha, guests were greeted with cupcakes and music at the departure gate at Hamad International Airport. Flight QR966 carried esteemed officials and was greeted in Medan by a traditional water cannon salute, along with high ranking government officials and dignitaries, followed by an official Gala dinner.
Speaking at the event, Qatar’s Minister of State and President of Qatar national Library, H.E. Dr. Hamid bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, said,
“The success of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture laid the groundwork for the launch of the new route between Doha and Medan, which will strengthen the people-to-people connections that were established last year. Thanks to the enduring spirit of cooperation between our two nations spearheaded by the wise leadership His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qataris and Indonesians can now unlock exciting new destinations and the diverse beauty of each. I would like to thank Qatar Airways for its unwavering commitment to excellence and connectivity and for helping send a powerful message of cultural cooperation as the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture comes to an end.”
Also speaking at the gala dinner, Qatar Airways Group’s Chief Executive Officer, ENGR. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said,

Our commitment to enhancing connectivity and offering passengers in Indonesia world-class travel experiences continues. The new Doha-Medan route will be operated with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner featuring 22 Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. Medan is the capital and largest city in the Indonesian Province of North Sumatra and is a thriving regional commercial hub. The city also offers leisure travelers cultural diversity, a picturesque landscape and a unique culinary scene.
