On Monday (March 4, 2024), PLAY Airlines announced the opening of ticket sales between Marrakech in Morocco and Iceland. The route will operate up to twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays starting October 17, 2024. PLAY offers service between North America and Europe with Iceland as their hub in the middle. Inbound travelers to Iceland also have the option of prolonging their layover into a multi-day stopover for no additional cost, before continuing their trip across the Atlantic. Visitors to Iceland can experience majestic natural wonders, such as waterfalls, glaciers, geysers and extraordinary wildlife just a few hours from Reykjavik. Iceland’s capital is also a desirable destination in itself, offering a rich culture, fantastic restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.
In Monday’s route announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,
“We are thrilled to be launching flights from Marrakech through our partnership with the Moroccan National Tourist Office. This is a magical city that is rich with history and culture. Everywhere we go, we give the competition a run for their money. We want to make travel more affordable and I am sure our Marrakech services will be well received by people who want to visit our beautiful country of Iceland.”
Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon and launched in June 2021, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights to nearly 40 destinations between Iceland and Europe, as well as to North America. Currently, PLAY operates flights from Baltimore, Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. in the U.S., as well as from Toronto, Canada. PLAY’s fleet of 10 Airbus A320/A321neos is the youngest fleet in Europe.
