On Friday (June 2, 2023), PLAY Airlines celebrated their inaugural flight to Athens, marking the first time in Icelandic aviation history that direct scheduled service to Athens is operating. Since launching ticket sales, demand has exceeded expectations, and therefore the carrier has decided to extend the Athens schedule through January 2024. Inbound customers to Iceland will also enjoy convenient one-stop connections to PLAY’s destinations in North America, including New York, Washington D.C., Boston, Baltimore and Toronto.

In Friday’s announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jonsson, said,

“We are thrilled to witness the culmination of our tireless efforts as we successfully launch the first-ever direct scheduled flights between Iceland and Athens. This significant milestone in Icelandic aviation history is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team. The overwhelming demand for this long-awaited route has convinced us to extend our Athens schedule until January 2024, ensuring that more travelers can experience the wonders of Athens. Moreover, this route serves as a vital link to PLAY's North American destinations, strengthening our commitment to connecting global travelers with affordable flights. We extend our gratitude to our passengers for their trust and support, and look forward to embarking on this new journey to Greece’s epic capital.”

Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon and launched in June 2021, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights between Iceland and Europe, as well as to North America. The carrier’s core motto is ‘Pay Less PLAY More’, meaning that the airline’s customers spend less on airfare and more while enjoying their holiday destination. PLAY’s fleet of Airbus A320neos and A321neos currently connect customers to 18 European and U.S. destinations. In 2023, Play will expand their fleet of Airbus A320/321neos to 10 aircraft, and increase their network to 37 destinations.
