On Wednesday (October 8, 2025), Norwegian Air Shuttle announced that they have won the tender to operate Denmark’s ‘Green Domestic Route.’  Starting Spring 2026, the route between Aalborg and Copenhagen will be flown with 40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).  This will be possible through a collaboration with AFSN, DCC & Shell Aviation and Aalborg Airport.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Norwegian’s Director of Communications and Public Relations in Denmark, Sara Neergaard, said,

“We are both proud and humbled that we at Norwegian have been awarded the tender. I would like to commend the government and the Prime Minister for the courage and ambition they have shown in launching this initiative. It is an important and necessary measure that can inspire both the EU and other member states to follow suit with similar schemes.

“Now it's about making the project a success. This requires that we in the industry take responsibility, and that we politically exploit the opportunity to encourage other European countries to follow the same path. In this way, Denmark can lead the way and ensure that the initiative is not just symbolic politics, but a real driving force for green transition throughout Europe.

“Aalborg is a natural choice because the infrastructure is largely already in place and can be utilized effectively with minimal changes to our operations. Aalborg Airport is a close and important partner for us, and the domestic route to Copenhagen is a cornerstone of our Danish operations. Together with our partner AFSN, who is absolutely crucial in this project, we are ready to ensure that SAF becomes a reality – and even more accessible in Aalborg in the future.

Also commenting on the sustainability partnership, Aalborg Airport’s CEO, Niels Hemmingsen, said,

“We are proud that Denmark's first “green domestic route” is becoming a reality, starting from Aalborg Airport.  This is an important step in the green transition of aviation and strong proof that collaboration across the industry can create real change.  Together with Norwegian, AFSN and DCC & Shell Aviation, we are showing that green solutions are not just for the future - they are also happening here and now.  At the same time, the project makes us as an airport even more attractive to both passengers and partners, as we can offer sustainable solutions and be a driving force for the future of aviation.

“Both AFSN and DCC & Shell Aviation have been active partners for the aviation players in Scandinavia in the work to promote the use of alternative fuels. As an infrastructure partner and as a fuel supplier, we have contributed to introducing SAF at a number of Danish and Norwegian airports. Therefore, it is a natural next step for us to be part of the further transition, as a partner on the new domestic route between Aalborg and Copenhagen together with Norwegian. We have been looking forward to this work and working purposefully towards it for a long time, say AFSN and DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark.”
