On Monday (August 5, 2024), Norse Atlantic Airways announced the completion of their landmark nonstop charter flight between Norway and Darwin in Australia, the first-ever direct flight between the two countries.  The flight was chartered by Albastar S.A. and brokered by Aircontact, the largest and leading air broker firm in Scandinavia, and showcases the efficiency and versatility of the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

In Monday’s announcement, Norse Atlantic Airways’ Director – Charter and ACMI, Mette Birkedahl, said,

“Completing this charter flight between Norway and Darwin, a first in aviation, is a testament to our commitment to consistently delivering excellent service to our charter clients.  The Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner is the perfect aircraft for ultra long distance flying and we are proud to demonstrate its capabilities on this historic route.”

The milestone flight departed Oslo Gardermoen Airport at 06:30 on Saturday, August 3rd and touched down at Darwin International Airport on Sunday, August 4th at 06:00 (all times local).  With a distance of approximately 14,730 km and a flight time of 16.5 hours, the flight highlights the long-range performance and capability of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, while underscoring Norse Atlantic Airways’ dedication to expanding their global reach.

Designed for long-haul flights, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has a range of around 8,315 nautical miles (15,400 km).  With advanced aerodynamics and lightweight composite materials, the aircraft also offers a significant reduction of fuel consumption and 25 percent lower CO2 emissions versus previous generation aircraft.  The 787 Dreamliner Family also features larger windows, better cabin pressure, and higher humidity, which can enhance passenger comfort, while reducing the effects of jet lag.

In 2023, Norse Atlantic Airways became the first airline to land a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on a ‘blue ice runway’, which was 3,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, at Troll Airfield Antarctica, on behalf of the Norwegian Polar Institute.

Founded in March 2021 by major shareholder and CEO Bjørn Tore Larsen, Norse Atlantic Airways offers affordable transatlantic and European flights.  The airline’s first flight between Oslo and the U.S. departed on June 14, 2022.  The company’s head office is located in Arendal, Norway, and Norse has a second office in London.  Norse has a fleet of 15 modern, fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.  The carrier offers service to New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Bangkok, Cape Town, Oslo, Athens, London, Berlin, Rome and Paris.
