On Thursday (April 8, 2021), startup ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Avelo Airlines announced the launch of service from Hollywood-Burbank International Airport (BUR) from April 28, 2021. The airline will launch with 11 Western U.S. destinations and introductory one-way fares from $19 for travel through September 15, 2021. Avelo Airlines is the first U.S. mainline startup in nearly 15 years, and plans on offering everyday low fares and a convenient travel experience. Avelo is backed by $125 million in private equity and will begin operations with three single-class Boeing 737-800s configured with 189 seats.

In Thursday’s announcement, Avelo Airlines’ Founder, Chairman and CEO, Andrey Levy, said,

“We are making flying more affordable and convenient by taking the greatest efficiencies we can find in the industry and sharing the savings with our Customers in the form of surprisingly low fares. Combine that with operating bases at many of the nation’s most convenient airports, infused with a culture of caring, and you have a different and better kind of airline that our Customers will love to fly, our Crewmembers are proud to work for and our shareholders are grateful they invested in. We are fortunate to have attracted a broad investor base with notable airline knowledge and experience. I would like to thank our board and investors for embracing our vision and standing by us during this unusual period.”

Avelo Airlines has developed an operating strategy with five main fundamentals. The first tenet includes a highly efficient business model based on the wide availability of high quality Boeing 737s, an abundance of professional talent and direct-to-consumer cloud-based sales channels. Next, the carrier will offer attractive everyday low one-way fares starting at only $19 on all routes to and from their base in Burbank. The carrier will also offer ancillary products/services at industry-low prices for guests who would prefer travel-enhancing options.

Avelo’s third fundamental is to offer a simple nonstop short-haul network with reliable on-time performance, quick turnaround times and dependable checked baggage delivery. The final fundamentals include the use of convenient smaller airports and deploying Boeing 737-800s, offering a larger aircraft compared to typical regional operators. Avelo expects to have a fleet of at least six 737NGs by the end of 2021.

Collectively, Avelo’s leadership team has over 200 years of aviation experience. The company’s founder, Andrew Levy, co-founded Allegiant Air, the nation’s most profitable airline, and previously served as the CFO of United Airlines. Avelo’s startup leadership team also includes former senior executives from Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Northwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

The company’s first operating base at Burbank will employ approximately 150 Crewmembers including pilots, flight attendants, technicians, customer service agents and ground crew, making Avelo the airport’s largest employer. Avelo will launch with a ‘Soul of Service Culture’ based on Crewmembers helping each other take better care of Customers. The company hopes to foster a kind, caring and welcoming attitude through ‘Avelo University,’ the company’s cross-functional Crewmember training program.
