On Monday (April 22, 2024), Japan Airlines announced that for a limited time the ‘Moriizo’ brand of the Japanese distilled spirit shochu will be available for purchase in First and Business Class on international flights.  The spirit will also be available for purchase in Premium Economy from April to May 2024 in commemoration of JAL’s 70 years of international service.  Shochu is primarily made from rice or sweet potatoes and can be served neat, on the rocks, or with cold or with hot water.

Moriizo is made in Tarumizu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, using carefully selected sweet potatoes and naturally filtered underground water from the Shirasu Plateau in the Takakuma Mountains.  It is brewed in the traditional kame-tsubo ceramic pottery, whose techniques and methods have been handed down since 1885.  The Moriizo shochu has a mellow, elegant, slightly sweet taste, and is well-known as a rare and beloved shochu worldwide.  The unique distilled spirit pairs well with Japanese food and a variety of other cuisine.

Over the last 25 years, JAL has offered limited sales of Moriizo, exclusively on international flights, and it has consistently remained one of the carrier’s best-selling products, attracting fans from across the globe.  A 720 ml bottle of Moriizo will be available for purchase onboard for 3,400 yen in First and Business Class from April 1st through July 31, 2024, or until supplies last.  On North American routes, Moriizo will be offered for sale on flights to Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego and Vancouver.  It will also be available for guests traveling to Honolulu and Kona in Hawai’i.
