On Thursday (May 11, 2023), Lufthansa announced the launch of a new, innovative and sustainable onboard meal offer called ‘Onboard Delights Last Minute.’ For nearly two years, the carrier has offered guests on cross-border European flights lasting more than one-hour, a high quality range of fresh meals, packaged snacks and drinks for purchase. The meals, including fresh salads, bowls and sandwiches, are prepared fresh daily by Gate Gourmet, with recipes from dean&david at the Frankfurt and Munich locations. The culinary offer also includes cake specialties from Dallmayr. These fresh meals are purposely prepared without colorants or preservatives, and therefore have a short shelf life and must be discarded in not sold onboard.

With ‘Onboard Delights Last Minute’ Lufthansa will reduce unnecessary food waste, while providing guests the opportunity to purchase fresh, high-quality food items at a discounted price. Now, passengers can purchase unsold items shortly before landing on all flights to Frankfurt and Munich on which Onboard Delights are offered, at the lower uniform price of only €3.50 to take with them. Another new feature of Lufthansa Onboard Delights is that award miles can be collected and redeemed when purchasing food and beverages from the Onboard Delights range. Guests will receive at least one award mile per euro spend when their Miles & More card is presented.

With sustainability being one of the Lufthansa Group’s top priorities, the company will reduce short-haul flight food wasted by 50 percent by 2025, compared to 2019 levels. To achieve this, the Group is optimizing catering processes and offering guests the opportunity to order meals in advance, thereby reducing the standard number of products held in stock. With this food waste reduction strategy, Lufthansa has already reduced the proportion of 2022 discarded perishable food by 45 percent compared to 2021. Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Eurowings have already been offering unsold food at reduced prices since 2022. As a result of this innovative initiative, approximately 80,000 food products were consumed in 2022, which otherwise would have been disposed of.
