On Thursday (September 15, 2022), Lufthansa crew celebrated the start of Munich Oktoberfest 2022 with new dirndl and flights departing simultaneously for Rio de Janeiro and San Diego. Special dirndl crewed flights to New York and Boston will follow on September 26th, along with flights to numerous European destinations. This year, Oktoberfest will take flight on over 800 long-haul flights to 33 destinations from Frankfurt and Munich, and will also be celebrated in Lufthansa’s Munich lounges. Guests will enjoy Bavarian specialties both onboard and in the lounges. Additionally, Lufthansa’s passenger service team in Munich’s Terminal 2 will greet customers in traditional costume instead of the classic Lufthansa uniform, with the ladies wearing dirndls and the men wearing lederhosen.

In Thursday’s announcement, Lufthansa Airlines’ CCO, Dr. Stefan Kreuzpainter, said,

“We are delighted to continue the 16-year history of the dirndl flights and thus also welcome visitors to the Oktoberfest on the ground and on board with Bavarian flair”

Munich Airport’s Chairman and CEO, Jost Lammers, added,

“In the coming weeks, Munich Airport will once again present itself as an attractive gateway to the Oktoberfest, and Lufthansa's dirndl crews will be part of that.”

From now until October 3rd, Lufthansa will be serving Bavarian specialties in First and Business Class. Guests will also receive roasted almonds, Oktoberfest chocolates and festive gingerbread hearts. Visitors to the lounges in Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 and in the satellite building will enjoy traditional Bavarian fare including Leberkäs’ (meat loaf), pretzels and Weißwürste. This year, the Oktoberfest menu in the Lufthansa First Class Lounge restaurant, which is festively decorated, will start with a traditional soup, followed by roasted duck, and a dessert of homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce, roasted almonds and rum sultanas.

The new traditional costume for long-haul cabin crew was once again designed by Munich-based costume specialist Angermaier. The ladies Wiesn dirndl has silver woven flowers with a color coordinated apron and a metal clasp on the apron band, while the men wear lederhosen with a classically cut waistcoat in the same fabric as the dirndl. With sustainability top of mind in everything the Lufthansa Group does, for the first time, the collection this year has been certified according to ‘Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX’. All costume components and materials were produced and processed sustainably, and to minimize transport distances and the associated carbon emissions, the fabrics were woven exclusively in Austria and produced in Europe.
