On Monday (June 24, 2024), Lufthansa announced that Lufthansa City Airlines will start passenger revenue service on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, with an inaugural flight between Munich and Birmingham with an Airbus A320neo. The first flight, VL2508, is scheduled to depart Munich at 09:10 local time. Starting July 27, 2024, the carrier’s second aircraft, an Airbus A319, will facilitate the launch of new service to Berlin, Hamburg and Bordeaux. In the future, Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet will expand with the addition of Airbus A320 Family and A220-300 aircraft.
In Monday’s announcement, Lufthansa City Airlines’ Managing Director, Jens Fehlinger, said,
“Lufthansa City Airlines is committed to successfully positioning itself in the European short and medium-haul segment from Munich and Frankfurt. A major investment in the future that will strengthen Germany as an aviation location and create numerous attractive jobs.”

The new routes are currently available for booking via all standard Lufthansa Group sales channels under the new airline code ‘VL.’ The first aircraft, an Airbus A320neo will initially fly to Birmingham, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hanover and Bremen. After Lufthansa City Airlines activates their first five Airbus A320 Family aircraft, their fleet will be expanded with at least eight more Airbus A320neos, and further A319s in the coming year. Delivery of 40 new Airbus A220-300s on order will commence from 2026.
Lufthansa City Airlines is launching operations with Airbus A320 Family jets. However, the Lufthansa Group has ordered 40 brand new Airbus A220-300s, while securing purchase options for 20 more. This sends a clear signal for the direction of what the new carrier’s future fleet might look like. Guests traveling with Lufthansa City Airlines can look forward to the same exceptional product and services offered by Lufthansa on short and medium-haul routes.
