Lufthansa Christens Brand New Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner ‘Frankfurt am Main’

Lufthansa has announced that their brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has been Christened ‘Frankfurt am Main,’ with the honors carries out by Hesse’s Minister-President Boris Rhein.

On Tuesday (October 21, 2025), Lufthansa announced the Christening of their brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft was Christened ‘Frankfurt am Main by Hesse’s Minister-President Boris Rhein at Frankfurt Airport. This is the first Lufthansa long-haul aircraft at their Hessian home hub to feature the new Allegris cabin concept. Guests can look forward to significantly improved comfort in all travel classes, with innovative seating concepts, high-quality materials, and state-of-the-art technology.
Speaking at Tuesday’s Christening ceremony in Frankfurt, Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s CEO, Carsten Spohr, said,
“This Boeing 787-9 is another milestone in our consistent fleet modernization journey. I am delighted that we can now also offer Allegris to guests at our largest hub. The new “Frankfurt am Main” not only carries the name of its home into the world: it also represents billions in investment in the premium experience at the Frankfurt hub.”
Also commenting at the ceremony, Hesse’s Minister-President, Boris Rhein, said,
“As one of the largest employers in Hesse, Lufthansa is a significant economic driver. It is one of the leading international airlines and builds bridges between people from all over the world. The relationship between Hesse and Lufthansa is particularly strong and based on trust and partnership. I am therefore more than honored to have the privilege of christening an aircraft for the second time with the name ‘Frankfurt am Main’. It is a wonderful tradition that Lufthansa aircraft carry the names of cities and regions as flying ambassadors around the world.”

The Lufthansa Group expects to add 100 new modern long-haul aircraft to their fleet by 2030, with around half to be based at their Frankfurt hub. The new Boeing 787-9, ‘Frankfurt am Main, registration D-ABPF, has been flying regularly between Frankfurt and Toronto since October 9, 2025. As the fleet further expands, Lufthansa will add more long-haul destinations for winter 2025/26, including Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Hyderabad, and Austin. The newly named 787-9 is the seventh aircraft to bear the ‘Frankfurt am Main’ name, including the first Lufthansa Airbus A380. Lufthansa first named an aircraft ‘Frankfurt’ in 1960 – with the arrival of the airline’s first Boeing 707.
