Lufthansa Cargo and Kuehne+Nagel have introduced ‘paperless lanes’ between Europe and Asia, eliminating physical documentation while optimizing the entire air freight process.
On Tuesday (July 18, 2023), Lufthansa Cargo announced that in partnership with Kuehne+Nagel they have pioneered paperless freight transportation with an all-digital shipment flow. By introducing ‘paperless lanes’ between Europe and Asia, the partners seek to eliminate the burden of physical documentation while further optimizing the entire air freight process. In addition to enhanced operational efficiency, the collaboration also makes substantial contributions to sustainability efforts within the air freight industry.
In Tuesday’s announcement, Lufthansa Cargo’s Vice President – Global Fulfillment Management, Dr. Jan-Wilhelm Breithaupt, said,
“We see great opportunities in this initiative as it supports all participants in pushing their handling efficiencies as well as increasing data availability and transparency throughout their network. The transition to a paperless environment will significantly reduce processing times plus complexity and offers just in time shipment status information. However, it will only be a first step towards a fully digitalized air freight future; especially accompanying documentation of special cargo will come into our focus soon enough.”
Also commenting on the sustainability collaboration, Kuehne+Nagel’s Vice President – Air Logistics Operations Germany, Kolja Mahler-Wingen, added,
“In addition to the positive effect of paperless handling, which primarily saves time and gains efficiency, a purely digitally supported process also offers further potential for automation in order to reach the best possible transparency and data quality for our customers around the globe. We as Kuehne+Nagel are highly committed to further expanding our digital ambitions on the way to a fully digitized air freight process.”
During the first weeks of the program’s pilot phase, Lufthansa Cargo and Kuehne+Nagel achieved 100 percent paperless shipments for general cargo between Germany and Hong Kong, including an electronic air waybill (AWB), accompanying documents and paper pouches. In the next phase, more paperless lanes will be added, with the goal of building a whole paperless corridor between Europe and Asia. Both partners encourage other industry players to join them in the effort to eliminate unnecessary paper documents. Participation in the ‘paperless corridor’ program is easy for interested logistic companies. All that is required is the participation in the electronic Air Was Bill (eAWB) Single Process, and the selection of the eFreight Special Handling Code (EAW) for all general cargo when preparing the shipment and paperless delivery to Lufthansa Cargo.
Headquartered in Switzerland, the Kuehne+Nagel Group is one of the world’s leading logistics companies and has over 79,000 employees at 1,300 locations in mor than 100 countries.
