Lufthansa Cargo and DB Schenker have agreed to continue their fossil-free flight offer between Frankfurt and Shanghai until at least October 2022. By using SAF and additional compensation, the partnership will save an additional 21,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
On Wednesday (March 2, 2022), Lufthansa Cargo announced an extension of their CO2 neutral flight offer with DB Schenker. The fossil-free cargo flights between Frankfurt (FRA) and Shanghai (PVG) using SAF and additional compensation will now continue until at least October 2022, thereby saving an additional 21,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Since launching the cooperation in 2020, Lufthansa Cargo and DB Schenker have saved 31,000 tons of emissions. The weekly flight rotation is the world’s only regular full charter fully covered by SAF, and on March 25th, the partners will conduct their 100th joint carbon neutral flight with the operation of flight number LH8405, a Boeing 777F.
In today’s announcement, DB Schenker’s Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight, Thorsten Meincke, said,
“It is our unshaken mission to build a carbon-neutral future for our customers and society at large. With our long-term partner, Lufthansa Cargo, we will now continue our carbon-neutral flight offer and as well as the financial commitment. Alternative fuels help us to realize change, not just as a vision for the future but today. We would love to welcome even more customers who want to walk the talk with us.”
Also commenting on the partnership extension, Lufthansa Cargo’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ashwin Bhat, added,
“We are very pleased on extending our cooperation with our global partner, DB Schenker. Together we operate completely CO2-neutral flight rotations between Asia and Europe as part of our summer flight schedule. DB Schenker has already committed to using about 7,500 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in 2022, which is a remarkable contribution to decarbonizing air freight.”
Lufthansa Cargo and DB Schenker piloted the concept of a fully SAF covered international freighter rotation between Frankfurt and Shanghai in November 2020. In April 2021, a regular charter connection was launched and then extended through the winter schedule. The program’s launch customers included a range of global brands including Siemens Healthineers, Mercedes-Benz, ZF, Merck, Nokia and Lenovo.
Each return cargo flight between Frankfurt and Shanghai requires 174 tons of conventional kerosene, which will be covered by the purchase of SAF. The SAF will then be fed into the refueling system at Frankfurt Airport, corresponding to 217,500 liters of SAF per week, which will be used by DB Schenker during the summer schedule. The use of SAF will save around 520 tons of CO2 emissions each week, and DB Schenker also offsets a further 150 tons of emissions generated during the transport and processing of SAF via certified carbon offset projects, resulting in a completely CO2 neutral flight.
