On Wednesday (December 20, 2023), LATAM Airlines Group announced an incremental order for five more Boeing 787 Dreamliners, expanding their commitment to the type to a total of 46.  The new order secures LATAM’s position as the largest Dreamliner operator in Latin America.  The five new jets will be powered by highly efficient GE Aerospace GEnx engines, supporting the Group’s commitment to have one of the most modern and efficient fleets, and becoming the first airline in South America to operate the engine type.

In Wednesday’s announcement, LATAM Airlines Group S.A.’s CFO, Ramiro Alfonsin, said,

“These actions are fully aligned with the commitment to sustainability and brings LATAM closer to the goal of becoming a carbon neutral group by 2050.  The incorporation of GEnx engines is a decision that provides greater flexibility and options for the expansion of the long-range fleet.  Furthermore, increasing the Boeing 787 fleet size will allow the group to operate with two different engine models, known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact, in a complementary way.”

Also commenting on LATAM’s incremental 787 order, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ VP – Latin America and Caribbean Sales, Mike Wilson, said,

"The 787 Dreamliner is perfectly suited to support LATAM group’s sustainability and operations goals with its exceptional performance, flexible route capability and enhanced passenger comfort.  We look forward to partnering with LATAM group as it connects Latin America with the world and makes a difference in the communities it serves.”

GE Aerospace’s VP – GE Commercial Programs, Kathy MacKenzie, added,

“GE Aerospace is pleased to welcome the LATAM Airlines Group to the GEnx engine family.  As LATAM group continues to expand and grow its 787 Dreamliner fleet, we look forward to supporting their continued success every step of the way.”

With over 50 million flight hours since entering service in 2011, the GEnx Family is the fastest selling high-thrust engine in GE history, with nearly 3,000 engines in service and on backlog plus spares.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner Family delivers a 25 percent reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to the airplanes they replace.  The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can accommodate up to 300 passengers and has a range of 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km).  The airplane also offers a spacious cabin, the largest windows, improved air quality and smooth ride technology.

LATAM Airlines Group S.A. is the leading airline group in Latin America, offering service in five domestic markets (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) as well as international service within Latin America and to Europe, Oceania, the United States and the Caribbean.  Currently, the Group has a fleet of 332 aircraft, including 56 Boeing passenger airplanes (767, 777, and 787s) as well as 256 Airbus aircraft (A319, A320, A320neo, A321 and A321neo).
