On Thursday (March 21, 2024), Japan Airlines announced that following a Board meeting, the carrier has decided to add 42 new aircraft to their fleet, including 21 Airbus A350-900s, 11 A321neos and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.  On international routes, the carrier will deploy 20 additional A350-900s, which currently serve as the backbone of their domestic operations.  The 10 additional Boeing 787-9s will join JAL’s existing fleet of over 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.  As part of the airline’s fleet renewal program, these new aircraft will help JAL expand and grow their international network, with a particular focus on North America, Asia and India.

Domestically, Japan Airlines will introduce 21 Boeing 737-8 MAX jets to replace their existing 737-800 fleet from 2026.  Updating their existing fleet of midsized Boeing 767s, the carrier will introduce 11 Airbus A321neos, which will be deployed on routes based on demand, including to/from Tokyo-Haneda from 2028.  JAL will also add one domestically configured Airbus A350-900 to replace the hull loss of an existing A350-900, which occurred on January 2, 2024, following a runway collision at Tokyo-Haneda.

New to Japan Airlines, the Airbus A321neo is the longest variant in the Airbus A320neo Family.  Equipped with the latest generation engines, CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM, the A321neo delivers a fuel use and emissions reduction of approximately 15 percent, as well as a substantially reduced noise footprint compared to the A321ceo.  The aircraft also features the Airbus Airspace cabin interior, offering guests a spacious and comfortable travel experience.
