Japan Airlines and Air Astana have signed a new codeshare agreement, which will allow both airlines to place their respective marketing codes on new Almaty to Tokyo flights launched by Air Astana, scheduled to commence in the spring of 2026.
On Thursday (August 22, 2024), Jalap Airlines (JAL) announced the signing of a new codeshare partnership with Almaty, Kazakhstan-based Air Almaty. Under the agreement, both airlines will place their marketing codes on Air Almaty’s new service between Almaty and Tokyo which is scheduled to launch in the Spring of 2026. Through the new partnership, JAL will expand their network into Kazakhstan, which is located in the heart of Central Asia, which previously remained a ‘white spot’ on JAL’s network map.
On Thursday’s announcement, Air Astana Group’s CEO, Peter Foster, said,
“Our collaboration with Japan Airlines is an exciting development that will enrich our international network and offer more travel options for our customers. We look forward to delivering a seamless travel experience for passengers between Kazakhstan and Japan.”
Also commenting on the new codeshare partnership, Japan Airlines Group’s CEO, Mitsuko Tottori, added,
“We are delighted to enter into cooperation with such a distinguished partner as Air Astana. We will contribute to further enhancement of over 30 years of diplomatic relationship between Japan and Kazakhstan, through developing passenger and cargo traffic.”
From spring 2026, codeshare routes include Air Almaty operated routes between Almaty and Tokyo, as well as Almaty-Astana/Atyrau. JAL operated codeshare routes include service between Tokyo and Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Okinawa.
