ITA Airways, Italy’s new national carrier, has joined the Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG). Established at the end of 2020, ITA Airways is one of Europe’s youngest airlines and offers an extensive network from their hubs at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate.
On Tuesday (January 31, 2023), BARIG, the Board of Airline Representatives in Germany, announced that ITA Airways, Italy’s new national carrier has joined the trade organization. Established at the end of 2020 as the successor to Alitalia, ITA Airways is one of Europe’s youngest airlines, and offers an extensive domestic and international network from their two hubs at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Linate (LIN) airports. Earlier this month, Lufthansa Group announced their intention to acquire a minority stake in the carrier, with the option of acquiring the remaining shares at a later date.
In Tuesday’s announcement, BARIG’s Chairman and Executive Director, Michael Hoppe, said,
“ITA Airways is a young and modern airline and an ambassador of ‘Made in Italy’ in the world. We are very delighted that ITA Airways—like more than 100 other airlines—has chosen a BARIG membership.”
Also commenting on the new BARIG membership, ITA Airways’ Country Manager – Germany, Rodney Cali, said,
“Germany is a strategic market for ITA Airways, and we are proud to be a member of BARIG. From sustainability to fair competition, BARIG drives forward key issues in the aviation industry which are essential to our airline. To ensure connectivity between Germany and Italy, ITA Airways offers 94 weekly flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, and Duesseldorf to its two hubs in Italy—Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate—as well as further connections to the whole Italian network and to major international destinations.”
Commencing operations on October 15, 2021 with a fleet of 52 aircraft, ITA Airways has been growing rapidly, and will add 39 new aircraft in their fleet in 2023 alone. The carrier’s international network will also expand with new routes to North America, including new service from Rome Fiumicino to San Francisco, Washington and Rio de Janeiro. The airline also focuses on cargo transportation and is certified for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical transport according to IATA’s global CEIV standard.
Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA Airways) was founded in November 2020 and is the new Italian national carrier wholly owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. Commencing operations in October 2021, the SkyTeam alliance member airline is committed to providing superior customer service through strong digitization processes that ensure a personalized, best-in-class guest experience. The company is committed to environmental sustainability through the operation of advanced fuel-efficient aircraft, the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and other developing technologies such as the development of urban air mobility through eVTOLs.
Founded in 1951, Frankfurt am Main-based BARIG (Board of Airline Representatives in Germany e.V.) represents over 100 national and international airlines in the scheduled, charter, low cost and air cargo sectors. The association works to improve conditions in the aviation industry in Germany and is the key industry contact for politics, authorities, industry and media.
