On Sunday (November 14, 2021), at the Dubai Airshow, Airbus announced that the portfolio airlines of Indigo Partners, including Wizz Air (Hungary), Frontier Airlines (U.S.), Volaris (Mexico) and JetSMART (Chile, Argentina), have placed a firm order for 255 Airbus A321neo Family aircraft under a joint Indigo Partners agreement. Wizz Air has ordered 75 A321neos and 27 A321XLRs for a total of 101 aircraft, while Frontier Airlines has ordered 91 A321neos. Volaris has ordered 39 A321neos and JetSMART has ordered 21 A321neos and two A321XLRs for a total of 23 aircraft. Additionally, Volaris and JetSMART will convert 38 A320neo orders to A321neos from their existing order backlog.

In Sunday’s announcement, Indigo Partners’ Managing Partner, Bill Franke, said,

“This order reaffirms our portfolio airlines’ commitment to consistent growth through the next decade. The Airbus A321neo and A321XLR have industry-leading efficiency, low unit costs and a substantially reduced carbon footprint relative to prior models. With these aircraft, Wizz, Frontier, Volaris and JetSMART will continue to offer low fares, stimulate the markets they serve and improve their industry-leading sustainability profile.”

Also commenting on the aircraft order, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, Christian Scherer, said,

“We are happy to further expand our relationship with our great Indigo Partners’ airlines Wizz, Frontier, Volaris and JetSMART who have acted fast and decisively over the last few months to position themselves for this landmark order as the effect of the pandemic recedes and the world wants more sustainable flying.”

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Indigo Partners LLC is a private equity fund focused on global investments in air transportation.

The Airbus A321neo incorporates new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver an over 25 percent fuel and CO2 reduction, as well as a 50 percent smaller noise footprint. The A321 XLR (extra long range) version provides a range extension to 4,700nm, giving the aircraft a flight time of up to 11 hours. At October 31, 2021, the Airbus A320neo Family had received over 7,550 orders from 122 customers since its launch in 2010. The aircraft entered service five years ago, and since that time, Airbus has delivered over 1,950 A320neo Family aircraft, contributing to a savings of 10 million tons of CO2.
