Iberia Plus Changes Way of Earning Avios

From November, Iberia will change the way to earn Avios from miles accrued to euro spend, while Elite tier points earning will remain unchanged. For every euro spent, excluding taxes, fees and charges, Iberia Plus members will now earn 5-8 Avios, depending on tier status.

On Monday (October 31, 2022), Iberia announced a change in the way Iberia Plus loyalty program members will earn Avios. From November, members will earn Avios based on euro spend rather than miles or distance traveled, and will receive between 5-8 Avios for each euro spent (excluding taxes, fees and charges) depending on their tier status. With the change, members will also earn Avios on ancillary services such as extra baggage and seat selection. The earning of Elite tier points and Elite points needed to upgrade tiers or attain more benefits will remain unchanged. Iberia’s IAG sister carrier, British Airways, also intend to adopt this model in early 2023.

In Monday’s announcement, Iberia’s Client Loyalty Director, Silvia Morán, said,

“We think this is a more fair and transparent way to reward our more loyal members, with a model that they have been requesting for some time and which is also more in line with other industry loyalty programmes.”

Also commenting on the change in the way Avios’ are earned, British Airways’ Head of Retail and Customer Relationship Management, Ian Romanis, added,

“We congratulate our colleagues at Iberia for introducing this change and we look forward to joining them in 2023. More announcements will follow about what this change will mean for our Executive Club programme, which will unlock even more opportunities for our Members to earn Avios when they fly.”

Iberia’s loyalty program, Iberia Plus, currently has over 10 million cardholders and offers six levels, namely Classic, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Infinita and Infinita Prime, along with Iberia Plus Kids for children between the age of two and eleven. Iberia Plus cardholders can also earn Avios when booking travel on partner airlines, as well as at select international hotel chains, car rentals, and other purchases with hundreds of program partners. Avios can also be redeemed for flights, hotels, car rentals, multi-day getaways and unique leisure experiences.
