On Friday (May 9, 2025), International Consolidated Airlines Group announced the placement of orders for 53 long-haul Boeing and Airbus aircraft, including 32 Boeing 787-10s for British Airways and 21 Airbus A330-900neos that can be deployed with Aer Lingus, Iberia or Level.  Subject to approval at IAG’s AGM in June, the new aircraft will enable the company’s airlines to grow and replace their long-haul fleets with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.  The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2033.  In addition to the order, British Airways has secured rights to purchase 10 additional Boeing 787s and up to 13 additional Airbus A330-900s.

The Airbus A330-900neos will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines, while British Airways’ Boeing 787-10s will be powered by General Electric engines.  Both engine orders include comprehensive warranty and maintenance packages with Rolls-Royce and General Electric, respectively.  These new orders follow previously announced orders in March 2025, and announced today for six Airbus A350-900s for Iberia, as well as six Airbus A350-100s and six Boeing 787-9s for British Airways.

In Friday’s announcement, IAG’s CEO, Luis Gallego, said,

“This order marks another milestone in our strategy and transformation programme and underlines our commitment to strengthening our airline brands and enhancing our customer proposition.  Looking ahead to the next decade, these new aircraft will enable us to strengthen our core markets and further improve our customer experience, while continuing to drive long-term value for our shareholders.”

In a separate press release on Friday (May 9, 2025), IAG reported their first quarter financial results for the period ending March 31, 2025.  The Group reported a first quarter net profit of €176 million or 3.7 euro cents per basic share on a year-over-year increase in revenue of 9.6 percent to €7.04 billion.  IAG’s total passenger revenue per available seat kilometer (PRASK) increased 3.2 percent to 7.58 euro cents, while total cost per available seat kilometer (CASK) increased 4.3 percent versus Q1 2024 to 8.65 euro cents.  Costs excluding fuel (CASK-ex) increased 8.8 percent year-over-year to 6.48 euro cents.  At March 31, 2025, IAG had Cash, cash equivalents, and current interest bearing deposits totaling €9.35 billion, and total liquidity of €12.36 billion.  During the first quarter, IAG reduced their net debt by €1,859 compared to December 31, 2024.

In Friday’s announcement, IAG’s Chief Executive Officer Luis Gallego, said,

“Our strong first quarter results reflect the performance of our businesses and the effectiveness of our strategy and transformation. We continue to deliver on our industry-leading financial targets. We remain focused on strengthening our broad portfolio of market-leading brands across our core markets of the North Atlantic, Latin America and intra-Europe.  We continue to see resilient demand for air travel across all our markets, particularly in the premium cabins and despite the macroeconomic uncertainty.  Our commitment to financial strength and shareholder value is reflected in €530 million of share buybacks completed in 2025 so far, alongside a proposed final dividend of €288 million, which brings our total dividend for 2024 to €435 million.”
