Frontier Airlines to Test APiJET’s Real Time Route Optimization Technology

Frontier Airlines has today announced an agreement with APiJET, the technology leader in real-time flight optimization, to test their Digital Winglets™ for operations centers. Digital Winglets uses TASAR (Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests) developed by NASA.

On Tuesday (June 13, 2023), Frontier Airlines announced that they have entered into an agreement with APiJET, the technology leader in real-time flight optimization, to test their Digital Winglets™ for flight operations centers. Digital Winglets uses TASAR (Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests), a technology originally developed by NASA, and later refined and productized by APiJET. The technology analyzes hundreds of variables and potential flight paths in real-time to provide route optimizations resulting in significant fuel and emissions savings.

In today’s announcement, APiJET’s CEO, Rob Green, said,

“NASA originally conceived TASAR as a pilot-driven application. However, by shifting flight optimization recommendations from the pilot to the airline’s operations center, APiJET has been able to significantly reduce deployment friction and time, as well as operational costs and overhead, all while maintaining the same significant savings that we’ve been able to achieve during third party testing of the pilot focused implementation.”

Also commenting on the testing agreement, Frontier Airlines’ CEO, Barry Biffle, said,

“We’re very excited to partner with APiJET in testing Digital Winglets™ and the potential it holds for achieving significant fuel savings. Frontier is constantly evaluating and looking at new technologies to enable us to continue to be a leader in sustainable aviation.”

Based in Seattle, Washington, APiJET is the company behind Digital Winglets™, a flight route optimization solution that provides real-time conflict-free, alternative flight paths. The technology continuously analyzes flight telemetry, including aircraft performance, wind, restricted airspace, convective weather, turbulence and conflicting traffic, and then recommends real-time, conflict-free re-routing. Digital Winglets helps to reduce fuel burn and flight time, thereby accelerating the operator's sustainability goals.
