flydubai has today ordered 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the airline’s first widebody jets ever. The carrier will use the new airplanes to open new routes and expand capacity on existing routes.
On Monday (November 13, 2023), from the Dubai Airshow 2023, Boeing announced that flydubai has placed an order for 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which will become the airline’s first widebody jets ever. The carrier will use the new airplanes to open new routes and expand capacity on existing routes. The 787-9 can accommodate 296 passengers and has a range of 7.565 nautical miles (14,010 km). Since entering passenger revenue service in 2011, the 787 Dreamliner Family has enabled the launch of over 380 new nonstop routes worldwide. Approximately half of the flights operated with 787 Dreamliners are in short and medium-haul markets below 2,700 nautical miles (5,000 km), highlighting the airplane’s versatility across all network segments.
At Monday’s signing ceremony, flydubai’s Chairman, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said,
“In 2008 when we placed our first-ever order for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft, we were confident of the vital role flydubai would play in supporting Dubai's aviation hub. I am proud today to see flydubai evolve further, surpassing labels and challenging the traditional conventions around travel. Today’s order reaffirms flydubai's commitment to enabling more people to travel across its expanding network. The highly fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner will allow flydubai to expand its horizon and cater to the growing demand on existing routes.”
Also commenting on the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner order, flydubai’s Chief Executive Officer, Ghaith Al Ghaith, said,
“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at flydubai. We are committed to offering the right product at the right time to cater to the changing market and customer needs. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner offers a perfect combination of operational excellence, fuel efficiency as well as passenger appeal.”
Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ President and CEO, Stan Deal, added,
“The 787-9 is perfectly suited for the needs of flydubai as it looks to open up longer-range routes and add capacity across its network. flydubai passengers will enjoy the Dreamliner effect, an experience like no other in the air, flying with more comfort and arriving at their destinations feeling more refreshed.”
Since commencing operations in 2009, flydubai has grown their network to over 120 destinations across 53 countries in Africa, Central Asia, the Caucuses, Central and South-East Europe, the GCC and the Middle East, and the Indian Subcontinent. The carrier has opened more than 75 new routes that did not previously have direct air links to Dubai or were not served by a UAE carrier. flydubai operates a single fleet type of 84 Boeing airplanes, including Boeing 737-800NGs, 737-8 MAX, and 737-9 MAX models, and also has an order backlog of 137 737s. At the Dubai Airshow in November 2023, the carrier ordered 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, their first widebody jets ever.
