Today, Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, announced that from June 1, 2020 they will transfer all their flights between Abu Dhabi and Beijing to Beijing’s iconic new Daxing International Airport (PKX). Daxing is the largest single-structure airport terminal and integrated transportation hub in the world. Etihad’s daily service between the UAE and Chinese capitals provides seamless connectivity to business and leisure travelers via the carrier’s Abu Dhabi hub. Additionally, daily service between Beijing and Nagoya provides the opportunity for short getaways to Japan. Daxing Airport will also provide Etihad Airways’ guests with greater air-rail connectivity across China. In Wednesday’s announcement, Etihad Aviation Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, Robin Kamark said,

“In October last year, Abu Dhabi Airports Company inked a sister-airport partnership with Beijing Daxing International Airport, which will strengthen the capital-to-capital link. Today, we are proud to announce that Etihad Airways will be one of the first airlines in the region to move to Beijing’s iconic Daxing International Airport. Since launching flights between Beijing and Abu Dhabi 12 years ago, we have experienced huge growth in China’s tourism and aviation markets, and enjoyed strong demand from business and leisure travelers, and cargo, assisted by direct services, codeshare partners, the mutual visa-exemption policy between the two nations implemented in January 2018, and the great joint efforts put into promoting bi-directional routes. The move also further reinforces our commitment to the China market and our Chinese guests and contributes to the promising bilateral relationship. Whilst the spread of COVID-19 has posed a major challenge for all airlines serving China, with a massive drop in demand on key routes, we remain optimistic that the situation will improve by the summer and we continue serving Beijing from Abu Dhabi presently, demonstrating our unwavering support and commitment to our Chinese partners and the China market as a whole.”

Designed by Zaha Hadid, Beijing Daxing International Airport is the largest single-structure airport terminal and integrated transportation hub in the world. The intermodal connectivity is projected to reach 202 million people in 28 Chinese cities by high-speed train within three hours. In addition to high speed trains, the extensive air-rail connections include inter-city and subway networks, providing environmentally-friendly connectivity for Etihad’s guests across China. Daxing Airport pioneers the use of double-deck departure and arrival platforms and employs the latest technologies such as facial recognition and real-time baggage tracking systems. Additionally, the state-of-the-art facility is focused on environmental sustainability with carbon reduction policies, solar panels and rainwater collection systems.
