The airline has started using their A380s on select cargo charter routes with the first ‘mini-freighter’ transporting medical supplies between Seoul and Amsterdam via Dubai. The aircraft has optimized the aircraft to carry around 50 tonnes of belly-hold cargo.
On Wednesday (November 11, 2020) Emirates announced the introduction of Airbus A380 ‘mini-freighter’ cargo charter service on select routes. The carrier’s Engineering and Flight Operations teams have optimized the aircraft to safely carry around 50 tonnes of belly-hold cargo, with the first flight carrying medical supplies between Seoul and Amsterdam via Dubai. The program was launched to meet demand for critical cargo, including medical supplies, to regions experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infections.
Emirates SkyCargo continues to optimize the freight capacity of their A380s with measures such as seat loading cargo in the passenger cabin, and plans on operating more cargo-only flights throughout November. Emirates SkyCargo operates a global cargo network that spans six continents with a dedicated fleet of Boeing 777 Freighters and 14 modified 777-300ERs with seats removed from Economy Class for additional capacity. Recently, the carrier’s cargo operations announced that they have set up the first EU GDP compliant airside hub dedicated to the safe transport of COVID-19 vaccines. Emirates SkyCargo currently offers cargo service on scheduled flights to 135 global destinations.
