On Wednesday (March 27, 2024), Emirates announced that they have activated their agreement with Neste for the uptake of SAF at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).  Over the course of 2024, more than two million gallons of blended SAF will be introduced into the fueling system at AMS.  Announced last year, Emirates’ partnership with Neste represents one of the largest volumes of SAF purchased by the carrier to date.  Once fully supplied into Schiphol’s fueling system, the blended SAF will include over 700,000 gallons of neat SAF.  Emirates is also working with Neste to supply SAF at Singapore Changi Airport in the coming months.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, Adel Al Redha, said,

“Collaborating with committed partners like Neste is one of the practical steps we are taking to reduce our emissions, and it’s an all-important milestone in our own sustainability journey as an airline.  Strong partnerships like this, especially at major air transport hubs such as Amsterdam, lay the foundation for how we can work with partners and airports to increase access to and availability of SAF across our network.”

Also commenting on the SAF partnership, Neste’s Vice President – Alexander Kueper, added,

“We are proud to support Emirates in their sustainability journey.  SAF is an available solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air travel and it is exciting that Emirates have started using our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.  It is also a great example of how we are working together with partners to accelerate SAF usage and are looking forward to the next steps of our cooperation.”

The SAF used under this agreement can be safely dropped into existing airport fuel infrastructure and jet engines.  In neat form, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.  Emirates’ first blended SAF flight departed Chicago O’Hare (ORD) in 2017, and the carrier currently operates flights from Paris, Lyon and Oslo with sustainable aviation fuel.  In October 2023, Emirates and their partners also integrated SAF into Dubai International Airport’s (DXB) fueling systems, with the SAF allocated to a number of flights, including service to Sydney.
