Edelweiss Christens Airbus A320 ‘Oberalp’, Introduces New Children’s Toys

Edelweiss has christened an Airbus A320, registration HB-JLS with the name ‘Oberalp’. During the ceremony at Zurich Airport on Wednesday (August 24th), a school class from Andermatt served as special guests, as the carrier introduced new children’s toys.

On Wednesday (August 24, 2022), Edelweiss held a special ceremony at Zurich Airport to christen an Airbus A320, registration HB-JLS with the name ‘Oberalp’. Attending the event as special guests was a school class of 24 third and fourth graders from Andermatt, as the carrier introduced new children’s toys that will make flying with Edelweiss even more family friendly. The leading Swiss leisure airline, Edelweiss is christening their aircraft after Swiss regions where the queen of the Alpine flower grows, in keeping with the motto ‘Where Edelweiss is at home’. The A320 (HB-JLS) was christened with the name Oberalp in the presence of political and tourism representatives from Andermatt and Sedrun.


At Wednesday’s ceremony in Zurich, Edelweiss’ Chief Commercial Officer, Patrick Heymann, said,


“We are delighted that the Oberalp represents the cantons of Uri and Graubünden on one of our aircraft. From now on, we will carry this diverse tourism region out into the wide world.”


Also commenting at the christening event, Andermatt-Ursenral Tourism’s Director, Thomas Christen, said,


“We too offer our guests relaxing holidays with countless opportunities for nature lovers, culture enthusiasts, sports fans or families. Our region offers almost limitless diversity in both summer and winter - and not least a wonderful habitat for the alpine flower Edelweiss.”

As a sign of the partnership between the airline and the region, Edelweiss will present a wooden bench in the shape of an airplane seat where passers-by can enjoy the beautiful views as they dream of their next holiday. The special school visitors at Wednesday’s christening ceremony also received new Edelweiss toys, including a puzzle book, coloring pencils, sports bag and plush marmot Giancarlo. The content is adapted to two age categories (3+ and 7+), and the sports bags are available in three different designs that the children can choose from. The youngest guests will also enjoy the plush marmot Edelweiss mascot Giancarlo.
