On Monday (July 17, 2023), Delta Air Lines announced that customers traveling to China and connecting onward with China Eastern Airlines via Shanghai-Pudong International Airport (PVG) can now check their bags to their final destination in China. Likewise, customers traveling from Interior China to the U.S. with Delta via PVG can also check-in their bags at their origin cities in China to their final destination in the U.S. Guests of both airlines will no longer be required to collect and re-check their luggage at PVG for both incoming and outgoing flights, and will just need to clear customs and board their onward flight.

In Monday’s announcement, Delta’s President of China, Wong Hong, said,

“Thanks to the partnership with China Eastern, we can offer a great benefit for our mutual customers who fly between the U.S. and China via Pudong Airport. We continue to work together to create a better travel experience for our customers in China and the U.S.”

The new connecting procedure, called ‘TransChina’, is now available on all flights to/from 96 cities via PVG operated by Delta’s partner, China Eastern and their subsidiary Shanghai Airlines, including Delta codeshare services. With China Eastern’s support, Delta became the first foreign airline in China to offer TransChina in June 2018. The service was suspended in February 2020 due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and relaunched again on July 17, 2023.

Both SkyTeam alliance members, Delta Air Lines and China Eastern Airlines began their strategic partnership in 2015, allowing both carriers to compete more effectively on routes between the U.S. and China. The airlines currently operate 260 codeshare flights weekly.
