On Thursday (June 6, 2024), Delta Air Lines announced the launch of their inaugural flight between Seattle (SEA) and Taipei, Taiwan (TPE).  The carrier also announced plans to seek U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approval to launch new direct service between Seattle and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).  This follows the recently enacted FAA Reauthorization Bill, which authorizes five new flights at DCA with ‘beyond-perimeter’ status.  The federal perimeter rule at DCA prohibits airlines from flying beyond 1,250 miles with few exceptions.  Since Seattle is a is the largest beyond-perimeter market, Delta is eligible to apply for one of the new slot pairs.

Speaking at the Taipei launch ceremony in Seattle on Thursday, Delta’s President, Glen Hauenstein, said,

“Seattle is a crucial hub for Delta.  With today’s Taipei launch, we are further solidifying Seattle’s role as our leading Pacific gateway.  And by adding a direct flight to our nation’s capital in Washington, D.C., Seattle customers will have the additional competition and choice they deserve.”
