Delta Air Lines Increases Firm Airbus A220 Order to 107 Aircraft

Delta Air Lines has firmed up an order for 12 additional A220-300s, bringing their total firm A220 order commitment to 107, including 45 A220-100s and 62 A220-300s. The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines.

On Tuesday (July 19, 2022), from the 2022 Farnborough International Airshow, Airbus announced that Delta Air Lines has placed a firm order for 12 additional Airbus A220-300s, expanding their firm order commitment to 107 aircraft, including 45 A220-100s and 62 A220-300s. The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney’s efficient GTF engines. Delta took delivery of their first A220 in 2018 and was the U.S. launch customer for the type. At the end of June 2022, Delta was operating a fleet of 388 Airbus aircraft including 56 A220s, 249 A320 Family, 57 A330s and 26 A350-900s.

In today’s announcment, Delta Air Lines’ SVP – Fleet & TechOps Supply Chain, Mahendra Nair, said,

“The A220-300 is economical, efficient and delivers superior performance. These additional aircraft in the A220 Family are an excellent investment for our customers and employees and will be fundamental as we work toward a more sustainable future for air travel.”

Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, Christian Scherer, added,

“Delta was the U.S. launch customer for the A220 and it is great to announce this incremental order that demonstrates how satisfied it is with the A220, economically and from a passenger perspective. On top of that, the versatility of this aircraft with the long range and short airfield performance makes it a real winner for our customers. Thank you, Delta, for your confidence in further expanding your fleet with all our new generation aircraft!”

The Airbus A220 Family is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, and combines state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest generation GTF engines. The aircraft delivers a 50 percent reduction in noise footprint and up to a 25 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, as well as 50 percent lower NOx emissions versus the industry standard. Airbus has delivered 220 A220s to 15 airlines operating on four continents. The versatile A220 is suited for regional as well as long distance routes. Thus far, over 60 million passengers have enjoyed the A220 experience. The global fleet is currently flying on over 700 routes to 300 destinations. At June 30, 2022, more than 25 customers have ordered over 760 A220 Family aircraft, confirming its breakthrough in the small single-aisle market.
