De Havilland Canada Celebrates 60 Years of Service of Iconic Twin Otter Aircraft

De Havilland Canada is celebrating the 60th anniversary of their iconic Twin Otter aircraft, widely viewed as one of the most versatile and dependable aircraft in aviation history.

On Tuesday (May 20, 2025), De Havilland Aircraft of Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of their iconic Twin Otter aircraft, which entered service in 1965. The Twin Otter transformed regional aviation and is world-renowned as one of the most versatile and dependable aircraft in aviation history. First taking to the skies on May 20, 1965, the Twin Otter was designed to meet the demanding conditions of Canada’s rugged north. Over the last six decades, the aircraft has proved its utility, from the Arctic to the Amazon, to commuter airlines, humanitarian missions, military operations and skydiving adventures.
In Tuesday’s announcement, De Havilland Canada’s CEO, Brian Chafe, said,
“Today, we are celebrating six decades of a manufacturing and operating a Canadian-made aircraft that serves the world. The Twin Otter is more than a machine; it’s a lifeline, a workhorse, and a testament to Canadian ingenuity. We’re proud that it continues to connect the most remote corners of the world with unmatched reliability.”
DHC’s Twin Otter continues to evolve with advancement in design and technology. The company’s current production model, the Canadian made DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G, features modern avionics and enhanced performance. Known for its rugged construction and short takeoff and landing capabilities (STOL), the Twin Otter can operate on wheels, skis, or floats, making it an ideal choice for customers in over 100 countries. Currently, the 1000th Twin Otter is in production, and De Havilland Canada is set to celebrate this milestone delivery later this year.
