Starting December 3, 2024, British Airways will launch new service between London Gatwick and Ivalo in the Finnish Lapland. Ivalo is home to Finland’s most northerly airport, and the region is also known as the ‘home’ of Santa Claus.
On Thursday (June 6, 2024), British Airways announced the start of new twice-weekly service between London Gatwick (LGW) and Ivalo (IVL) in the Finnish Lapland from December 3, 2024. Located in the Arctic Circle, Ivalo is a village located on the Ivalo river, which welcomes visitors from around the world, especially during the festive Christmas season. The village is also known as a gateway to Saariselkä, a popular resort town for those wishing to enjoy a range of winter sports such as skiing, snowmobile safaris, toboggan rides and snowshoeing. Additionally, those who would like to hand deliver their Christmas lists to Saint Nick can meet him at the Northern Lights village in Saariselkä.
Flights will be operated by British Airways’ short-haul subsidiary, BA Euroflyer, and customers can bring skiing or snowboarding gear as part of their checked baggage, providing the bag is within 190 x 75 x65cm limit.
In Thursday’s announcement, BA Euroflyer’s CEO, Tom Stoddart, said,
“Our BA Euroflyer network continues to grow, and we are excited for a new addition to our winter schedule, alongside the likes of Innsbruck and Geneva. Lapland is synonymous with winter and Ivalo is blanketed in snow for a large part of the year, so customers can expect a white Christmas, with some red and blue sprinkled in from British Airways for good measure.”

The new service to Ivalo follows new service between London Heathrow and Tromsø in Norway announced last week, which will also commence this December. Return flights between London Gatwick and Ivalo are now available for booking from £345, and the route will operate until February 14, 2025.
